Lake Freeman Description

Lake Freeman is a man made lake outside of Monticello, Indiana formed in 1925 by the completion of the Oakdale Dam. Construction of the Oakdale Dam began in 1923 and was completed in 1925, daming the waters of the Tippecanoe River. Lake Freeman, together with its sister lake, Lake Shafer is part of the Twin Lakes region, a popular summer recreational area centered around the town of Monticello Indiana. Compared to the more commercial lake, Lake Shafer, Lake Freeman remains more privatized and residential. Lake Freeman, is however, home of the Madam Carroll, a pleasure excursion vessel, 36 feet in width and 135 feet in length. Lake Freeman is roughly 1500 acres and 50 miles of shoreline in size. Average depths vary from 7 feet to 30 feet at the Oakdale Dam. Each lake has a large variety of fish to catch, from bass fishing, catfish fishing, bluegill fishing, and many others. Spend a day golfing at one of many local golf courses and country clubs. Relax and have fun on Lake Shafer or Lake Freeman, located in Monticello, Indiana. Many of the local marinas offer watercraft rentals for family enjoyment on the lakes. Take time out to visit one of Monticello's beaches or sandbars. Monticello lakes are easily accessible, and provide relaxation and fun throughout your stay. Located on Lake Shafer in Monticello, Indiana, Indiana Beach is a family day full of fun with many things to enjoy inside the park. Visit Indiana Beach throughout the summer and take part in many of the summer holiday activities. More than 100 camps, resorts and other commercial enterprises are located around the two lakes, in addition to the more than 1,000 year-around homes, numerous summer cottages and mobile homes. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day the influx of summer residents and visitors to area multiples area population several times. Tourism alone is said to generate an estimated $70 million annually in retail sales and services, making tourism one of White County's economic cornerstones. The best fishing here is before Memorial Day and after Labor Day due to the high recreational use. The current state record white bass and hybrid striped bass came from Freeman. Featured Species: Hybrid Striped Bass, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Channel Catfish, White Bass, White Crappie, Longear Sunfish and Bluegill.
