Lake Lemon Description

Lake Lemon is located in the beautiful rolling hills of southern Indiana just 10 miles northeast of Bloomington, Indiana. The lake frequently attracts visitors traveling from as far as Kentucky and northern Indiana. Lake Lemon is the 11th largest lake in the state and 7th largest public reservoir in Indiana with a size of 1,650 acres, 24 miles of shoreline, and an average depth of 9.7 feet. The lake is home to two dozen varieties of fish (including largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill), wildlife (including beaver and muskrat), and birds (including Bald Eagle, heron, and egret). Since 1985, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources has released 73 Bald Eagle chicks at nearby Lake Monroe, resulting in an increasing number of sightings of this species at Lake Lemon. A very wide range of plants and trees find comfortable habit on the lands immediately surrounding the lake. The most abundant plants include American Lotus, cattail and Spatterdock. Tree varieties include Silver Maple and Oak, both in abundance. There are two publicly accessible parks located on the lake. The largest is Riddle Point Park operated by the Lake Lemon Conservancy district. This park features a boat ramp, a one acre (250,000 m²) native prairie grass demonstration area, a beach, a shelter house and a nature trail. The other park is Little Africa Wildlife Viewing Area, which covers 24 acres (97,000 m²) on a peninsula on the east end of the lake and features a nature trail. Lake Lemon Marina is the only marina on the lake. It is located on the north shore of the lake and offers the only publicly available boat fuel on the lake. A private yacht club called Bloomington Yacht Club exists on the south shore of the lake. Also on the south shore of the lake is the Indiana University Aquatic Center. This center hosts a number of activities including sailing, rowing, and water skiing. The facility is home to the Indiana University Women's Rowing Team and Indiana University Club Rowing Team. It is a man-made reservoir that produces some of the best bass fishing in southern Indiana. Lake Lemon is managed by the Lake Lemon Conservancy, and includes the Little Africa and Goose Hollow wildlife viewing areas. Fishing: Lake Lemon is one of Indiana's most popular and productive fishing lakes. The best fishing is in March, April, May and June. Lake Lemon hosts several bass fishing tournaments throughout the year. Most abundant species include largemouth bass, channel and flathead catfish, bluegill and crappie. An Indiana fishing license is required and state fishing laws are in effect.

Lake Lemon is an reservoir located in southern Indiana approximately 10 miles (15 km) northeast of Bloomington, Indiana. It is bounded by private and public property in Monroe County and Brown County, with the eastern end of the lake in Brown County. The surface area of the lake is 1,650 acres (6.7 km²), making it the 11th largest lake in Indiana. There are 24 miles (39 km) of shoreline. The lake has an average depth of 9.7 feet (3 m) at full pool level. The greatest depth is somewhat in excess of 20 feet (6 m), matching with the original Bean Blossom Creek bed.
